ABOUT FREERUNNING

On this page you can read about freerunning, the history behind it and how freerunning differs from parkour.

Freedom, creativity, endurance – these are the core elements of “Freerunning”. Through the discipline, “Freerunners” push the limits of what is humanly possible, explore their surroundings in unconventional ways, and redefine our understanding of the urban landscape.

What is freerunning?

Freerunning, also known as Freerun, is a discipline that stems from Parkour. While parkour focuses on navigating from point A to B as quickly and efficiently as possible, freerunning focuses on creativity and freedom. Freerunners use complex acrobatic exercises and tricks to interact with their environment – not just as a way to get around, but as a form of artistic expression.

Practitioners of Freerunning are called 'Freerunners'. In Freerunning it's all about performing acrobatic jumps and using the city. Where parkour is about getting from A to B as quickly and efficiently as possible, the focal point in Freerunning is more the acrobatic play. Competitions and world championships are held in Freerunning. Team JIYO has often won or been on the podium here.

Freerunners: athletes and artists

Freerunners are not just athletes, they are also artists. They see the city as their canvas and their movements as brushstrokes that create a picture of power, agility and courage. A freerunner does not see a wall as an obstacle, but as a challenge and an opportunity to explore new ways of moving.

These athletes seek to break barriers – both the physical ones in their surroundings and the mental ones within themselves. They confront fear and push their bodies to the limit to achieve movements that seem almost supernatural to ordinary spectators. But for a freerunner, that is exactly what it is – natural.

Getting started with freerunning

It is important to start carefully, ideally under the guidance of an experienced coach. Start with the basic movements and build up your strength, agility and balance. And remember: freerunning is not about competing with others – it is about competing with yourself, pushing your own limits and overcoming your own obstacles.

Ultimately, freerunning is about much more than the impressive jumps and acrobatic tricks. It is a lifestyle, a means of self-expression and a way to experience freedom. For a freerunner the whole world is a playground, and only imagination sets the limits for what is possible.
